Narration – Direct & Indirect Speech | Learning Charts, Definition, Meaning, Rules, Examples and Exercise January 21, 2022November 13, 2021 by Spoken English Direct Speech: जब किसी वक्ता के कथन को उसी के शब्दों दोहराया जाता है, तब वह Direct Speech कहलाता है। Direct Spee. को Inverted Commas के बीच में रखा जाता है। Indirect Speech: जब किसी वक्ता के कथन को उसी के शब्दों के न दोहराकर उसके आशय या सारांश को अपने शब्दों में व्यक्त किया जाता है, तब वह Indirect Speech कहलाता है। Indirect Speech को Inverted Commas के भीतर नहीं रखा जाता है। Direct Speech Indirect Speech 1. उसने कहा, “मैं तैयार हूँ।” He said, “I am ready.” उसने कहा कि मैं तैयार हूँ। He said that he was ready. 2. राम ने मुझसे कहा, “तुम मेरे मेरे दोस्त हो।’Ram said to me, “You are my friend.” राम ने मुझसे कहा कि तुम दोस्त हो। Ram told me that I was his friend. 3. उसने मुझसे पूछा, “क्या तुम बीमार हो ? He asked me, “Are you ill?” उसने मुझसे पूछा कि क्या तुम बीमार हो He asked me if I was ill. इन उदाहरणों से यह स्पष्ट है कि हिंदी में Speech परिवर्तन के नियम एकदम सरल हैं। Indirect Speech में Inverted Commas के बदले ‘कि’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है; सर्वनाम, काल और वाक्य की बनावट को बदलने की आवश्यकता नहीं पड़ती है। परंतु अँगरेजी भाषा में ऐसी बात नहीं है। Speech परिवर्तन के बाद वाक्य में अनेक changes आ जाते हैं। अतः Indirect Speech वाले वाक्य का अनुवाद करते समय सावधानी बरतने की जरूरत पड़ती है। पहले हम हिंदी के ऐसे वाक्यों के अनुवाद पर विचार करें जो Direct Speech में हैं और जिनका अनुवाद भी Direct Speech में करना है। ऐसा करना एकदम आसान है क्योंकि अनुवाद हूबहू किया जाता है, जैसा कि इन उदाहरणों से स्पष्ट है राम कहता है, “मैं बहुत गरीब हूँ।” Ram says, “I am very poor.” राम मुझसे कहता है, “मैं तुम्हारा दोस्त हूँ।” Ram says to me, “I am your friend.” मैंने उससे कहा, “तुम गरीब नहीं हो।” I said to him, “You are not poor.” उसने मुझसे कहा, “तुम कौन हो?’ He said to me, “Who are you?” मैंने उससे पूछा, “तुम्हारा क्या नाम है?”I asked him, “What is your name?” उसने मुझसे कहा, ”वहाँ मत जाओ।”He said to me, Don’t go there.” वह मुझसे कहती है, “तुम कहाँ रहते हो?’She says to me, “Where do you live?” Note: say/said के बाद to का प्रयोग होगा यदि इसके बाद कोई Object आए। जैसे He said to me. He says to me. I say to him. परंतु tell/told/ask/asked के बाद to का प्रयोग नहीं होगा। जैसे He told me. She tells me. I shall tell them. Ram asked me. अब हम हिंदी के ऐसे वाक्यों के अनुवाद पर विचार करें जो Indirect Speech में हैं। ऐसे वाक्यों का अनुवाद आप Direct Speech में भी कर सकते हैं, क्योंकि ऐसा करना आपके लिए ज्यादा आसान हो निम्नलिखित उदाहरणों से यह स्पष्ट है वह कहता है कि मैं आज व्यस्त हूँ।(= वह कहता है, “मैं आज व्यस्त हूँ।”)He says, I am busy today.” उसने मुझसे कहा कि मैं तैयार हूँ।(= उसने मुझसे कहा, “मैं तैयार हूँ।”)He said to me, I am ready.” राम ने कहा कि मेरी माँ बहुत दयालु है।(= राम ने कहा, “मेरी माँ बहुत दयालु है।”)।Ram said, “My mother is very kind.” उसने कहा कि तुम कौन हो।(= उसने कहा, “तुम कौन हो?”)He said, “Who are you?” उसने मुझसे पूछा कि तुम कहाँ रहते हो। (= उसने मुझसे पूछा, “तुम कहाँ रहते हो?”) He asked me, “Where do you live?” उसने मुझसे कहा कि यहाँ मत खेलो। (= उसने मुझसे कहा, “यहाँ मत खेलो।”)He said to me, Don’t play here.” वह मुझसे कहता है कि वहाँ जाओ।(= वह मुझसे कहता है, “वहाँ जाओ।”) He says to me, “Go there. Note: इन उदाहरणों में आपने देखा है कि वाक्य में प्रयुक्त कि को हटा दिया गया है और वहाँ पर Comma का प्रयोग हुआ है तथा आग आनेवाले भाग को Double Inverted Commas से घेर दिया गया है। अब ऐसे वाक्यों पर विचार करें जिनका अनुवाद Indirect Form of Speech में करना है। ऐसे वाक्यों का अनुवाद मौखिक या रफ में पहले आप Direct Speech में करें, फिर Rules of Narration को ध्यान में रखकर Direct Speech को Indirect Speech में बदल दें। अतः आपको यहाँ यह जानना आवश्यक है कि Direct Speech को Indirect Speech में कैसे परिवर्तित किया जाता है। इसके कुछ नियम हैं जिन्हें समझने के पहले कुछ पारिभाषिक शब्दों को समझ लें (a) Reporting Verb: Inverted Commas के बाहर एक वाक्य रहता है जिसके Verb को Reporting Verb कहते हैं। He said, “I am ill.” यहाँ ‘said’ Reporting Verb है। (b) Reported Speech: Inverted Commas के भीतर जो वाक्य रहता है उसे Reported Speech कहते हैं। He said, “I am ill.” यहाँ “I am ill.” Reported Speech है। (c) Verb of the Reported Speech: Inverted Commas के भीतर जो वाक्य रहता है उसे Reported Speech कहते हैं और उसमें प्रयुक्त Verb को Verb of the Reported Speech कहते हैं। He said, “I am ill.” यहाँ ‘am Verb of the Reported Speech है। Direct Speech को Indirect Speech में बदलने के लिए कुछ General Rules और कुछ Special Rules हैं। General Rules उन नियमों को कहते हैं जो प्रत्येक प्रकार के वाक्यों के साथ लागू होते हैं। General Rules को हम तीन भागों में इस प्रकार बाँट सकते हैं (i)Change of Person (ii) Change of Tense (iii) Change of other parts of Speech Contents [hide]1 (I) Change of Person1.1 Solved Examples:2 (II) Change of Tense3 Solved Examples:3.1 Solved Examples:4 (III) Change of other parts of Speech4.1 Solved Examples:5 Interrogative Sentences: Indirect Speech5.1 Solved Examples:6 Imperative Sentences: Indirect Speech6.1 Solved Examples: (I) Change of Person Direct Speech को Indirect Speech में बदलने के लिए Reported Speech में प्रयुक्त Pronouns को इस प्रकार परिवर्तित किया जाता है। First Person-Reporting Verb के Subject के अनुसार Second Person-Reporting Verb के Object के अनुसार Third Person-No Change इसके लिए इस सूत्र को ध्यान में रखें 1 2 3 S O N 1 का अर्थ है First Person S का अर्थ है Subject 2 का अर्थ है Second Person 0 का अर्थ है Object 3 का अर्थ है Third Person N का अर्थ है No Change अर्थात्, First Person – Subject के अनुसार Second Person – Object के अनुसार Third Person – No Change Note: 1. जब Reporting Verb, Present या Future Tense’ में रहता है, तब Indirect Speech में कहीं भी Tense में कोई परिवर्तन नहीं होता है। जब Inverted Commas के भीतर Assertive Sentence रहता है, तब Indirect Speech में Inverted Commas के बदले that का प्रयोग होता है। जब Reporting Verb ‘say/says/said’ रहे और उसके बाद Object रहे, तब आप यहाँ इसे Indirect Speech में tell/ tells/told’ में बदल दें। Solved Examples: 1. वह कहता है कि मैं तैयार हूँ।He says, I am ready.” He says that he is ready. यहाँ Inverted Commas के बदले that का प्रयोग हुआ है। पुनः I (First Person) को Subject (He) के अनुसार बदल दिया गया है, क्योंकि First Person Subject’ के अनुसार बदलता है। 2. वह कहती है कि मैं गरीब हूँ। She says, “I am poor.” She says that she is poor. यहाँ भी I (First Person) को Subject (She) के अनुसार बदल दिया गया है। 3. बच्चे कहते हैं कि हमलोग तैयार हैं।The children say, “We are ready.” The children say that they are ready. 4. वह मुझसे कहता है कि मैं तुम्हारा दोस्त हूँ।He says to me, I am your friend.”He tells me that he is my friend. यहाँ says to को tells में बदल दिया गया है। I (First Person) को Subject (He) के अनुसार तथा your (Second Person) को Object (me) के अनुसार बदल दिया गया है। यहाँ Reporting Verb ‘says’ का Subject he’ और Object me’ है। 5. सीता मुझसे कहती है कि मैं तुमसे प्यार करती हूँ।Sita says to me, I love you.” Sita tells me that she loves me. 6. सीता कहती है कि मैं एक गरीब लड़की हूँ। Sita says, “I am a poor girl.” Sita says that she is a poor girl. अब आप एक ही बार में Indirect Speech में अनुवाद करना सीखें। अनुवाद करते समय काफी सतर्कतापूर्वक Rules of Narration को ध्यान में रखें। Solved Examples: वह कहता है कि मैं एक ईमानदार आदमी हूँ। He says that he is an honest man. सीता कहती है कि मैं अनुपस्थित नहीं थी। Sita says that she was not absent. वह मुझसे कहता है कि मैं तुम्हारा नेता हूँ।He tells me that he is my leader. मैं राम से कहता हूँ कि मैं तुम्हारी मदद करूंगा।I tell Ram that I shall help him. वह मुझसे कहती है कि मैं तुम्हें पढ़ा सकती हूँ।She tells me that she can teach me. वह कहता है कि मैं अँगरेजी जानता हूँ।He says that he knows English. वे लोग कहते हैं कि हमलोग ईमानदार हैं।They say that they are honest. मैं कहता हूँ कि वह बेईमान नहीं है।I say that he is not dishonest. (II) Change of Tense (i) जब Reporting Verb ‘Present/Future Tense में रहता है, तब Indirect Speech में कहीं भी Tense में कोई परिवर्तन नहीं होता है। अभी तक दिए गए उदाहरणों से यह पूर्णतः स्पष्ट है। (ii) जब Reporting Verb Past Tense में रहता है, तब Inverted Commas के भीतर प्रयुक्त Tense में परिवर्तन होता है। यह परिवर्तन इस प्रकार होता है Direct Indirect Simple Present Simple Past Present Continuous Past Continuous Present Perfect Past Perfect Present Perfect Continuous Past Perfect Continuous Simple Past Past Perfect Past Continuous Past Perfect Continuous Past Perfect No change of Tense Past Perfect Continuous No change of Tense Shall/will should/would can could may might am/is/are was/were have/has had was/were had been had had had/had could/should/would/might generally no change Solved Examples: उसने कहा कि मैं तैयार हूँ।He said, “I am ready. He said that he was ready. यहाँ Pronoun के साथ-साथ Verb में भी परिवर्तन हुआ है क्योंकि Reporting Verb said’ Past Tense में है। उसने कहा कि मुझे कलम नहीं है। He said, I have no pen.” He said that he had no pen. सीता ने कहा कि मैंने उसे देखा है। Sita said, “I have seen him.” । Sita said that she had seen him. राम ने मुझसे कहा कि मैं तुमसे प्यार करता हूँ। Ram said to me, I love you.” Ram told me that he loved me. उसने मुझसे कहा कि मैं तुम्हारा दोस्त हूँ। He said to me, I am your friend.” He told me that he was my friend. लड़कों ने कहा कि हमलोग स्कूल जा रहे हैं। The boys said, “We are going to school.” The boys said that they were going to school. उसने कहा कि मैं जाऊँगा। He said, “I shall go.“ He said that he would go. सीता ने कहा कि मैं तैर सकती हैं। Sita said, I can swim.” Sita said that she could swim. उनलोगों ने कहा कि हमें जाना है। They said, “We have to go.” They said that they had to go. उसने मुझसे कहा कि मैं तुम्हारे यहाँ जा रहा हूँ।He said to me, I am going to you.”He told me that he was going to me. मैंने उससे कहा कि मैं तुम्हारे यहाँ जा रहा हूँ।I said to him, “I am going to you.”I told him that I was going to him. Note: (i) ऊपर दिए गए उदाहरणों में आपने देखा है कि Reported Speech में प्रयुक्त Present Tense को Corresponding Past Tense में परिवर्तित कर दिया गया है। (ii) said to को told में बदल दिया गया है। Solved Examples: उसने कहा कि मैं वहाँ गया था। He said, “I went there.” He said that he had gone there. यहाँ ‘Simple Past Past Perfect में बदल गया है। रहमान ने कहा कि मैं सो रहा था। Rehman said, “I was sleeping.” Rehman said that he had been sleeping. शीला ने कहा कि मैं सो चुकी थी। Sheela said, I had slept.” Sheela said that she had slept. राम ने मुझसे कहा कि मैंने तुम्हारी मदद की थी। Ram said to me, I helped you.” Ram told me that he had helped me. अगर ‘कि’ के बाद आनेवाले clause में कोई ऐसा कथन हो जिससे चिरंतन सत्य (Universal Truth) या प्राकृतिक नियम (Natural Law) का बोध हो, तो उस clause के Verb के Tense में कोई परिवर्तन नहीं होगा। जैसे शिक्षक ने कहा कि पृथ्वी गोल है। The teacher said, “The earth is round.” The teacher said that the earth is round. यहाँ the earth was round लिखना गलत होगा क्योंकि पृथ्वी गोल है, यह एक चिरंतन सत्य है। उसने कहा कि सूर्य पूरब में उगता है। He said, “The sun rises in the east.” He said that the sun rises in the east. शिक्षक ने कहा कि ईमानदारी सबसे अच्छी नीति है। The teacher said, “Honesty is the best policy.” The teacher said that honesty is the best policy. (III) Change of other parts of Speech जब Reporting Verb “Past Tense में रहता है तब Reported Speech में जितने भी निकटता-सूचक शब्द रहते हैं वे सब-के-सब Indirect Speech में दूरी सूचक शब्दों में बदलें जाते हैं Direct Indirect This that These those Here there Hence thence Now then Thus so today that day yesterday the day before/the previous day Tomorrow the next day/the following day Solved Examples: उसने कहा कि मैं आज नहीं खेलूंगा । He said, “I shall not play today.” He said that he would not play that day. सीता ने कहा कि मैं कल नाचूँगी । Sita said, “I shall dance tomorrow.” Sita said that she would dance the next day. उसने कहा कि यह मेरा है। He said, “This is mine.” He said that that was his. मोहन ने कहा कि मैं यहाँ खुश रहूँगा। Mohan said, I shall be happy here.” Mohan said that he would be happy there. Interrogative Sentences: Indirect Speech यदि Inverted Commas के भीतर Interrogative Sentence हो, तो इसे Indirect Speech में बदलने के लिए निम्नलिखित नियमों की सहायता लें। (i) Reporting Verb को ask में बदल दें। (ii) Inverted Commas के बदले that का प्रयोग नहीं करें। अगर Sentence Question Word’ (When, What, Why, Where. How, Who, Which, etc) से शुरू हो, तो that की जगह पर प्रयुक्त Question Word ही दें। (iii) यदि Interrogative Sentence किसी Anomalous Finite (am, is, are, was, were, have, has, do, does, did, can, could, should, shall, will etc) से शुरू हो, तो Inverted commas के बदले if/whether का प्रयोग करें। (iv) प्रयुक्त Interrogative Verb Form को Assertive Verb Form में बदल दें और Indirect Speech के जो सामान्य नियम हैं, उन्हें apply कर पूरे वाक्य को Indirect Speech में बदल दें। Note: Interrogative Verb Form को Assertive Verb Form में इस प्रकार बदलें Do you eat? You eat. Does he laugh? He laughs. Do you not go? You do not go. Does he read? He reads. Did he go? He went. Did she not come? She did not come. Are you ill? You are ill. Have you no cow? You have no cow. Who are you? Who you are. What have you done? What you have done. When does he come? When he comes. What is your name? What your name is. Where do you live? Where you live. Solved Examples: उसने मुझसे कहा कि क्या तुम बीमार हो । He said to me, “Are you ill?” He asked me if I was ill. सीता ने मुझसे कहा कि क्या तुम राम को जानते हो। Sita said to me, ““Do you know Ram?” Sita asked me if I knew Ram उसने मुझसे कहा कि क्या तुम नहीं पढ़ रहे हो। He said to me, “Are you not reading?” He asked me if I was not reading. मोहन ने सोहन से कहा कि क्या तुम वहाँ नहीं गए। Mohan said to Sohan, “Did you not go there?” Mohan asked Sohan if he had not gone there. राम ने मुझसे कहा कि तुम कौन हो? Ram said to me, “Who are you?” Ram asked me who I was. उसने मुझसे पूछा कि तुम कहाँ रहते हो। He asked me, “Where do you live?” He asked me where I lived. उसने मुझसे पूछा कि तुम्हारा क्या नाम है? He asked me, “What is your name?” He asked me what my name was. राम ने मुझसे कहा कि तुम क्यों उदास हो। Ram said to me, “Why are you sad?” Ram asked me why I was sad. Imperative Sentences: Indirect Speech Imperative Sentence से प्रायः order (आदेश), advice (सलाह) या request (अनुरोध) का बोध होता है। इसे Indirect Speech में बदलने के लिए निम्नलिखित उपाय करें Reporting Verb को अर्थ के अनुसार tell/ask/order/command/request/suggest/advise में बदल दें। Direct Speech में Reporting Verb के बाद Object रहे या न रहे, Indirect Speech में Reporting Verb के बादObject अवश्य दें। Please, Kindly आदि शब्दों का लोप कर दें। Inverted Commas को to/not to में बदल दें। Solved Examples: उसने मुझसे कहा कि एक गिलास पानी लाओ। He said to me, “Bring a glass of water.” He ordered me to bring a glass of water. उसने मुझसे कहा कि वहाँ मत जाओ। He said to me, “Don’t go there.” He told me not to go there. राम ने मोहन से कहा कि कृपया मुझे एक कलम दें। Ram said to Mohan, “Please give me a pen.” Ram requested Mohan to give him a pen. डॉक्टर ने मुझसे कहा कि समय से दवा लो। The doctor said to me, “Take medicine in time.” The doctor advised me to take medicine in time. मेरे पुत्र ने मुझसे कहा कि कृपया मुझे एक कोट खरीद दीजिए। My son said to me, “Please buy me a coat.” My son requested me to buy him a coat. मैंने अपने नौकर से कहा कि बाजार जाओ। I said to my servant, “Go to market.” I ordered my servant to go to market. शिक्षक ने लड़कों से कहा कि शोरगुल मत करो। The teacher said to the boys, “Don’t make a noise.” The teacher told the boys not to make a noise.
