1. What Are Verb Forms?

In English, verbs are divided into five main forms:

Form Name Usage Example
V1 Base Form I go to school every day.
V2 Past Simple Yesterday, I went to the market.
V3 Past Participle I have gone to the library.
V4 Present Participle / Gerund I am going to the park.
V5 Third Person Singular Present He goes to college every day.

Note: V1 is the base verb, and the other forms are derived from it to indicate tense, aspect, or agreement.

2. Meaning of Each Verb Form

  1. V1 (Base Form): The dictionary form of the verb. Used in present tense (except third person singular) and in infinitives.
  2. V2 (Past Simple): Expresses completed actions in the past.
  3. V3 (Past Participle): Used in perfect tenses and passive voice.
  4. V4 (Present Participle / Gerund): Indicates ongoing actions or is used as a noun form.
  5. V5 (Third Person Singular): Used in present tense with he, she, it.

3. Forming Verb Tenses with V1-V5

  • Present Simple: V1 (except 3rd person) / V5 (3rd person)
    • Example: She plays cricket every weekend.
  • Past Simple: V2
    • Example: They watched a movie yesterday.
  • Present Continuous: am/is/are + V4
    • Example: I am reading a book now.
  • Present Perfect: have/has + V3
    • Example: He has finished his homework.
  • Past Perfect: had + V3
    • Example: She had left before the party started.
  • Future Simple: will + V1
    • Example: We will travel tomorrow.

4. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using V1 instead of V2 for past actions (e.g., I go yesterday I went yesterday )
  • Confusing V3 with V2 in perfect tenses (I have went  I have gone )
  • Using V5 with plural subjects (They goes  They go )
