However w.e.f. 22.07.2017 option has also been given to give up 50% of concession value for senior citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Number of senior citizens who gave up concession for the period 22.07.2025 to 30.11.2025 are as under:-<\/p>\n<p>(a) 100% of concession value: 5.67 lakh.<\/p>\n<p>(b) 50% of concession value: 5.81 lakh.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018give up\u2019 concession scheme has the effect of increasing the earnings of the Railways which is pooled together to meet the revenue expenditure of the Railways including the development of Railway stations.<\/p>\n<p>This Press Release is based on the information given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Rajen Gohain in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on 03.01.2025 (Wednesday).<\/p>\n<p>Source: PIB<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a clear breakdown of <strong>railway ticket subsidies and concessions<\/strong>\u2014both general and IRCTC-specific:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>1. <strong>General Indian Railways Subsidy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Government heavily subsidizes train travel. In FY 2025-24, Indian Railways provided approximately <strong>\u20b960,466 crore<\/strong> in subsidies\u2014covering about <strong>45% of passenger travel costs<\/strong>. For every <strong>\u20b9100<\/strong> of service cost, passengers paid only around <strong>\u20b955<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In FY 2025-23, subsidies amounted to <strong>\u20b956,993 crore<\/strong>, around <strong>46% of fare reduction<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Certain groups\u2014like <strong>persons with disabilities<\/strong>, <strong>students<\/strong>, and <strong>patients<\/strong>\u2014receive <strong>additional concessions<\/strong> beyond these subsidies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2. <strong>Concessions for Specific Categories<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Even with widespread subsidies, Indian Railways offers further fare reductions to certain groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjans)<\/strong>: Up to <strong>75% concession<\/strong> in various classes\u2014including Second Class, Sleeper, First Class, 3AC, AC Chair Car; lower percentages apply for premium classes and season tickets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Students, Artists, Sportspersons<\/strong>: Up to <strong>75% concession<\/strong> in applicable classes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Patients (11 medical categories)<\/strong>: Concessions range from <strong>50% to 100%<\/strong>, depending on illness and class, and may extend to escorts as well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Others<\/strong>: Farmers, awardees, war widows, and medical professionals also qualify for varying concessions, detailed in the broader concession policies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>3. <strong>Senior Citizen Concessions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Concessions for senior citizens (40% for men \u2265 60 yrs, 50% for women \u2265 58 yrs) were <strong>suspended in March 2020<\/strong> due to COVID-19.<\/li>\n<li>Indian Railways has <strong>not reinstated<\/strong> these concessions. Official statements affirm there are <strong>no current plans<\/strong> to bring them back.<\/li>\n<li>Social media posts claiming their restoration are <strong>false<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>4. <strong>IRCTC-Specific Subsidy (\u201cGive It Up\u201d Scheme)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>IRCTC allowed passengers (especially seniors) to <strong>forgo their concession voluntarily<\/strong> and contribute more\u2014modelled after LPG subsidy opt-out efforts.
