In order to provide better accessibility to passengers with disabilities, short term facilities as detailed below have been planned at all stations, beginning with \u2018A-1\u2019, \u2018A\u2019 &amp; \u2018B\u2019 category stations:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Standard ramp for barrier free entry.<br \/>\n\u2022 Earmarking at least two parking lots.<br \/>\n\u2022 Non-slippery walk-way from parking lot to building.<br \/>\n\u2022 Signages of appropriate visibility.<br \/>\n\u2022 At least one toilet (on the ground floor).<br \/>\n\u2022 At least one drinking water tap suitable for use by differently-abled persons.<br \/>\n\u2022 May I help you\u2019 Booth.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, long term facilities, as detailed below, have been planned at \u2018A-1\u2019, \u2018A\u2019 &amp; \u2018B\u2019 category stations:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Provision of facility for inter-platform transfer.<br \/>\n\u2022 Engraving on edges of platform.<\/p>\n<p>Further, as per the existing guidelines, \u2018A-1\u2019 category stations qualify for provision of escalators\/elevators while \u2018A\u2019 category, \u2018C\u2019 category and stations of tourist importance qualify for provision of escalators under desirable amenities. 277 escalators and 112 lifts have been provided at various stations till November, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Instructions also exist for provision of Wheel Chairs at stations. This facility is provided, duly escorted by porters (on payment) as per present practice. Further, SLRD (Second Class Cum Luggage Cum Guard Van &amp; Disabled friendly compartment) coaches and Power Cars for Garib Rath trains having provisions for compartment for disabled persons with air-conditioning are already in service. Presently, around 3300 such coaches are in service. These coaches have wider entrance doors for wheelchair access. Besides, following features are also provided in these coaches: \u2013<\/p>\n<p>(i) Wider entrance doors of 920mm width against 782mm in conventional body side doors.<br \/>\n(ii) Handrails on side walls for providing assistance to the disabled.<br \/>\n(iii) Wider aisle of 1050mm instead of usual 570mm (the seats alongside the sidewall have been removed).<br \/>\n(iv) Wider cushioned Berths \u2013 707mm instead of 607mm in conventional coaches.<br \/>\n(v) To accommodate wheel chairs, space between berths increased to 1201mm against usual 542mm.<br \/>\n(vi) Larger Lavatory: 1947mm X 1947mm instead of 1540mm X 1189mm.<br \/>\n(vii) Wider lavatory door provided: 840mm instead of usual 520mm.<br \/>\n(viii) Additional grab rails provided in the lavatory.<br \/>\n(ix) Lower height of wash basin and mirror in the toilet.<\/p>\n<p>For assistance to visually impaired travellers, Braille signages are provided on newly manufactured coaches. Retrofitment on existing coaches has also been taken up in a phased manner.<\/p>\n<p>This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Manoj Sinha in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on 16.03.2025 (Wednesday).<\/p>\n<p>Source : PIB<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a complete overview of <strong>facilities for persons with disabilities (\u201cDivyangjan\u201d)<\/strong> in <strong>Indian Railways<\/strong>, covering station-based amenities, onboard services, booking and concessions:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>\ud83c\udfeb Station Facilities (Short-Term &amp; Long-Term)<\/h2>\n<h3>Short-term accessibility features (at A\u20111, A, B category stations):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Standard <strong>ramp entries<\/strong>, with at least two designated parking spots and <strong>non\u2011slippery walkways<\/strong> from parking to station entrance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visible signage<\/strong>, at least one accessible toilet (ground floor), and a drinking-water tap suitable for use by disabled passengers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cMay I Help You\u201d help booths<\/strong> for assistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Long-term infrastructure improvements:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Inter-platform transfer facilities<\/strong>, such as foot-over bridges with ramps and\/or elevators.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Platform edge engraving and tactile guidance<\/strong> for the visually impaired.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Mobility support:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Over <strong>7,000 wheelchairs<\/strong> are stationed across <strong>~5,400 stations<\/strong>, with at least one wheelchair per platform, and one per two platforms in island configurations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Battery\u2011Operated Vehicles (BOVs)\/E\u2011wheelchairs<\/strong> or \u201cbuggies\u201d are provided\u2014sometimes free, other times nominally chargeable (\u20b940\u2013\u20b9100) under CSR or station-specific sponsorship schemes.<\/li>\n<li>Examples include <strong>Nagpur Junction<\/strong> where an e\u2011wheelchair service (\u20b9100\/player) is available, and <strong>Thiruvananthapuram Central<\/strong>, where <strong>15 mobile ramps and 15 custom wheelchairs<\/strong> were launched under &#8220;Project Sugamya&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Lifts and escalators:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>As of recent data: <strong>981 lifts at ~400 stations<\/strong>, <strong>1,090 escalators at ~339 stations<\/strong>; more installations are underway to meet accessibility guidelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>\ud83d\ude86 Onboard Train Facilities<\/h2>\n<h3>SLRD \/ SRD Coaches:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>SLRD (Second Class cum Luggage\/Disabled\u2011friendly)<\/strong> and <strong>SRD<\/strong> coaches are attached to nearly <strong>every Mail\/Express train<\/strong>, and in Garib Rath trains as AC disabled\u2011friendly compartments.<\/li>\n<li>Features include:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wide entrance doors (\u2248920\u202fmm)<\/strong>, <strong>wider aisles (\u22481,050\u202fmm)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Space for <strong>wheelchair storage<\/strong>, <strong>larger lavatories<\/strong> with grab rails, lower-height washbasin and mirror.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Four berths<\/strong> per compartment: two lower reserved for PwD and two upper for accompanying assistants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Visual accessibility:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Braille signage<\/strong> is installed in newer coaches\u2014and retrofitting in older stock is in progress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Berth allotment &amp; reservation policy:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Ticket booking automatically reserves <strong>lower berths<\/strong> for persons with disabilities and senior citizens via PRS\u2014subject to availability.<\/li>\n<li>Additional <strong>quota<\/strong>: typically <strong>4 sleeper-class berths and 2 in 3AC<\/strong> per train are reserved for PwD passengers.<\/li>\n<li>If an upper berth is assigned but a lower berth becomes vacant, TTE can reassign it post-departure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>\ud83d\udcc4 Booking &amp; Concessions<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Special PRS counters<\/strong> are available at stations handling reservations for differently-abled passengers and senior citizens.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concessions<\/strong> (off base fare only; surcharges extra) as per PwD category:\n<ul>\n<li>75% concession in 2S, Sleeper, 3AC, AC Chair Car.<\/li>\n<li>50% concession in 1AC and 2AC (sometimes up to 25% in premium trains).<\/li>\n<li>One <strong>escort<\/strong> is allowed at the same discount.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>PwD concessions can be availed <strong>online (using Divyangjan ID card)<\/strong> or <strong>offline<\/strong> at PRS counters upon producing a disability certificate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>\u2696\ufe0f Recent Directions &amp;
