In the days before the interview<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  • Draw a line down the center of a piece of paper. On the left side, make a bulleted list of what the employer is looking for based on the job posting. On the right side, make a bulleted list of the qualities you possess that fit those requirements.<\/li>\n
  • Research the company,\u00a0industry\u00a0and the competition.<\/li>\n
  • Prepare your\u00a060-second personal statement.<\/li>\n
  • Write at least five success stories to answer\u00a0behavioral interview questions\u00a0(“Tell me about a time when…” or “Give me an example of a time…”).<\/li>\n
  • List five\u00a0questions to ask\u00a0the interviewer about the job, the company and the industry.<\/li>\n
  • Research salaries to determine your worth.<\/li>\n
  • Determine your salary needs based on your living expenses.<\/li>\n

      Before you go to the interview<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      Do you look professional?\u00a0Check yourself in the mirror; part of your confidence will come from looking good.<\/p>\n

      Carry these items to the interview:<\/p>\n

      • A copy of your references.<\/li>\n
      • A pad of paper on which to take notes, though notes are optional.<\/li>\n

        • Arrive early\u2014enter the building 10 minutes before your appointment.<\/li>\n
        • Review your prepared stories and answers.<\/li>\n
        • Go to the restroom and check your appearance one last time.<\/li>\n
        • Announce yourself to the receptionist in a professional manner.<\/li>\n
        • Stand and greet your interviewer with a hearty\u2014not bone-crushing\u2014handshake.<\/li>\n
        • Smile and maintain eye contact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          During the interview<\/strong><\/h2>\n
            \n
          • Try to focus on the points you have prepared without sounding rehearsed or stiff.<\/li>\n
          • Relax and enjoy the conversation.<\/li>\n
          • Learn what you can about the company.<\/li>\n
          • Ask questions and listen; read between the lines.<\/li>\n
          • At the conclusion, thank the interviewer, and determine the next steps.<\/li>\n
          • Ask for the interviewer’s business card so you can send a follow-up letter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            After the interview<\/strong><\/h2>\n

            • As soon as possible, write down what you are thinking and feeling.<\/li>\n
            • Later in the day, review what you wrote and assess how you did.<\/li>\n
