{"id":292,"date":"2024-01-02T19:51:56","date_gmt":"2024-01-02T19:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/misasdma.in\/?p=292"},"modified":"2024-01-02T19:51:56","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T19:51:56","slug":"use-of-would-could-should","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reilsolar.com\/resume\/use-of-would-could-should\/","title":{"rendered":"Use of Would Could Should"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7250aa7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7250aa7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n<p><strong>COULD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Could can be used in a number of ways:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<br \/>\nAs the past form of can.<\/strong><br \/>\nI have another video about this,\u00a0click here\u00a0for my lesson about can, could and be able to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<br \/>\nWe use could to say that an action or situation is possible in the present or future.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example:<br \/>\n<em>I could go shopping today.<\/em><br \/>\nI\u2019m saying that it is possible. I\u2019m not saying I will go \u2013 maybe I will, maybe I won\u2019t, but I could \u2013 it\u2019s possible.<br \/>\nWe usually give more information so I would say:<br \/>\nFor example:<br \/>\n<em>If I get paid, I could go shopping today.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nAnother example:<br \/>\n<em>My friend could visit me next week.<\/em><br \/>\nIt\u2019s possible, but maybe he won\u2019t \u2013 maybe he will have other plans, or choose not to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. We can also use could to talk about situations that are not realistic.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nFor example:<br \/>\n<em>I\u2019m so hungry, I could eat a horse.<\/em><br \/>\n(This is a common English expression, but of course I couldn\u2019t really eat a horse).<br \/>\n<em>I\u2019m so tired, I could sleep for a week.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. We can use could have to talk about possibility in the past.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nFor example:<br \/>\n<em>My test went badly, but it could have been worse.<\/em><br \/>\n(It was bad, but it wasn\u2019t a disaster)<\/p>\n<p>For example:<br \/>\n<em>I was lucky when I fell over, I could have been hurt.<\/em><br \/>\n(I\u2019m talking about something in the past that was possible \u2013 but it did not happen \u2013 I wasn\u2019t hurt, but I could have been.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. We can use could to say something would not be possible.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nFor example:<br \/>\n<em>I couldn\u2019t live in a busy city, I\u2019d hate it.<br \/>\n<\/em>(I\u2019m saying that this unreal situation would not be possible for me. Luckily I don\u2019t live in a busy city, I live in the countryside.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. In the past we use couldn\u2019t have.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example:<br \/>\n<em>My holiday was amazing, it couldn\u2019t have been better.<\/em><br \/>\n(My holiday was so amazing, nothing could have made it better \u2013 it was perfect.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df73b8a elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"df73b8a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"elementor-divider\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bb1fb04 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bb1fb04\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n<p><strong>WOULD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0We use would to talk about imagined situations, situations that are not real.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example:<br \/>\n<em>I would like to be a millionaire.<\/em><br \/>\n(I like the idea of being a millionaire , I want to be a millionaire \u2013 but it is not real. I would like to be a millionaire.)<\/p>\n<p><em>My friend wouldn\u2019t want to be a doctor.<\/em><br \/>\n(It\u2019s not real because he is not a doctor.\u00a0 I can imagine that this would not be a good job for him. He wouldn\u2019t like all the blood.)<\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019d help you, but I don\u2019t have time<\/em>.<br \/>\n(I am saying that if I did have the time, if I wasn\u2019t busy, I would help you.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. We often use would in conditional sentences, and in unlikely situations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example:<br \/>\n<em>If I had a million dollars, I would buy a Ferrari.<\/em><br \/>\n(In this case I don\u2019t have a million dollars so it is an unreal situation, it is possible that one day I will have a million dollars, but it is unlikely.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n3. When talking about imagined situations in the past we use would have.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nFor example:<br \/>\n<em>I would have called you, but I didn\u2019t have your number.<\/em><br \/>\n(I didn\u2019t have your number, so I didn\u2019t call you)<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n4. We can use would to say that someone refused to do something.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nFor example:<br \/>\n<em>I asked Chris to clean the kitchen, but he wouldn\u2019t do it.<\/em><br \/>\n(He said no)<\/p>\n<p><em>My car wouldn\u2019t start this morning.<\/em><br \/>\n(My car refused to start, it wasn\u2019t working properly)<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n5. We can use would to talk about things that happened regularly in the past.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nFor example:<br \/>\n<em>When my sister and I were children, we would often play in the garden.<\/em><br \/>\n(Here it is similar to used to. We used to play in the garden.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ee1b51 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"2ee1b51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"elementor-divider\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3f03780 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3f03780\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>SHOULD<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>1. We use should to say that it is a good idea to do something, that something is the right thing to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example:<br \/>\n<em>You look sick, you should go to the doctor.<\/em><br \/>\n(It\u2019s a good idea to the doctor)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>The government should improve education.<\/em><br \/>\n(Improving education is the right thing to do.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Should we go to the party, or should we stay at home?<\/em><br \/>\n(Is going to the party a good idea?)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>2. We use shouldn\u2019t to say that something is not a good thing to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example:<br \/>\n<em>You shouldn\u2019t smoke.<\/em><br \/>\n(It\u2019s bad for your health)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>3. We often use should with \u2018I think\u2019 to show our opinion, or to ask for someone else\u2019s opinion or advice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example:<br \/>\n<em>You look tired, I think you should go to bed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>I don\u2019t think you should go to the party.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Do you think I should wear this shirt?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>4. We can also use should to say that something is not right, that we expect it to be different.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example:<br \/>\n<em>The price of this ticket is wrong, it should be \u00a320, not \u00a330.<\/em><br \/>\n(The ticket price says \u00a330 but it\u2019s wrong it should be \u00a320)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>The driver should be wearing his seatbelt.<br \/>\n<\/em>(He is not wearing his seatbelt, this is dangerous, he should wear the seatbelt)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>5. We can use should to say that we expect something to happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example:<br \/>\n<em>I\u2019ve been studying a lot, I should pass the exam.<\/em><br \/>\n(I expect to pass the exam, I think I will pass the exam)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>It shouldn\u2019t be difficult to rent a car at the airport.<\/em><br \/>\n(I don\u2019t think it will be difficult to rent a car when we get to the airport)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>6. We use should have to talk about regret about something that we didn\u2019t do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example:<br \/>\n<em>Sorry I\u2019m late. There was so much traffic, I should have taken the train.<\/em><br \/>\n(I would have been on time if I had taken the train, but unfortunately I drove my car so now I\u2019m late. I regret not taking the train.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>7. We use shouldn\u2019t have to talk about something that we did do, but now we regret it, it was the wrong thing to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example:<br \/>\n<em>I feel terrible, I shouldn\u2019t have drunk so much last night.<\/em><br \/>\n(I drunk too much beer and now I have a terrible hangover.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Compare these two:<\/strong><br \/>\nThere is lot of traffic, you should take the train.<br \/>\nThere was a lot of traffic, I should have taken the train.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You can see with the first, I am giving my opinion or advice about what is a good idea to do.<br \/>\nAnd with the second I am giving my opinion about the past, what you should have done differently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>8. We can use \u2018ought to\u2019 instead of should. This is more formal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example:<br \/>\n<em>You ought to go to the doctor.<br \/>\nYou ought not go to the party.<br \/>\nDo you think I ought to go to the doctor?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COULD Could can be used in a number of ways: 1.
