Sinha<\/em>.<\/p>\n When converting direct speech into indirect speech, pronouns<\/strong> are changed according to the person speaking, the person spoken to, and the person spoken about.<\/p>\n Here, the pronoun “I” changes to “she” and “you” changes to “me” based on the context.<\/p>\n The tense of the reported speech generally shifts one step backward. However, if the reporting verb is in the present, future, or future perfect, the tense in the direct speech usually remains the same<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Direct<\/strong>: He says, “I work every day.”<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Indirect<\/strong>: He says that he works every day. (No change because the reporting verb is in the present)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Direct<\/strong>: She said, “I am reading a book.”<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Indirect<\/strong>: She said that she was reading a book. (Tense changes to past continuous)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n If the reporting verb is in the present<\/strong> or future<\/strong>, the tense in the reported speech does not change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Direct<\/strong>: He says, “I will help you with this task.”<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Indirect<\/strong>: He says that he will help me with this task. (No change in tense because the reporting verb “says” is in the present)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Direct<\/strong>: He will say, “I will attend the meeting tomorrow.”<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Indirect<\/strong>: He will say that he will attend the meeting tomorrow. (No change because the reporting verb is in the future tense)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Time expressions often need to be modified when converting direct speech into indirect speech. Some of the common time expressions and their corresponding changes are:<\/p>\n The reporting verb may need to be changed to reflect the nature of the speech.<\/p>\n Direct<\/strong>: He said to me, “Please help me.”<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Indirect<\/strong>: He told me to help him.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Direct<\/strong>: She said, “I am feeling unwell.”<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Indirect<\/strong>: She said that she was feeling unwell.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n In yes\/no questions<\/strong>, we use if<\/strong> or whether<\/strong> for indirect speech.
