Noun Shortcut rules <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Shortcut Rule 1 <\/strong>: The following words are uncountable and are normally used in the singular form only. The indefinite article “A or An” Should not be used with them. They have no <\/p>\n\n\n\n

plural forms. ‘A\/An’ not used before them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example<\/strong> : Luggage \/ Baggage \/ Breakage \/ Advice \/ Furniture \/ Information \/ Scenery \/ Poetry \/ Work \/ Soap \/ Food \/ Bread \/ Fish \/ Paper \/ <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Machinery etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) The Sceneries of Himachal is very beautiful. \u2613<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1)The Scenery of <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Himachal is very beautiful. \u2714<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) I know that he has many informations. \u2613<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) I know that he has much information \/ a lot of information. \u2714
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) They gave me a good advice. \u2613<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) The gave me a piece of good advice. \u2714<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortcut Rule 2 <\/strong>: The words such as “News \/ Maths \/ Ethics \/ Politics \/ Phonetics \/ Economics \/ Statistics \/ Measles \/ Mumps \/ Rickets \/ Billiards \/ Innings” look like plural nouns but give singular meaning. So, they take singular form of verbs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mathematics is a difficult subject. \u2714<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But say “His Mathematics are very weak”. \u2714<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rule : When Preceded by a possessive adjective, the noun takes a plural verb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Shortcut Rule 3<\/strong> : Some Nouns have the same form whether singular or plural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ex : Sheep \/ Deer \/ Service \/ Series \/ Species <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortcut Rule 4 <\/strong>: The following nouns are always used in the plural form only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cattle \/ People \/ Police \/ Electorate \/ Poultry \/ <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trousers \/ Scissors \/ Spectacles \/ Binoculars \/ <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crackers \/ Swine \/ Gentry \/ Clergy. All these are <\/p>\n\n\n\n

used with plural form of verbs.

The police is coming towards us now. \u2613<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police are coming towards us now. \u2714<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortcut Rule 5<\/strong> : Add ‘S’ to the main word in compound noun to make it plural.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Sister-in-Law<\/strong>, the plural form is Sisters-in-Law, not Sister-in-Laws<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Brother-in- Law<\/strong>, the plural form is Brothers-in-law, not Brothers-in- Laws<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Shortcut Rule 6<\/strong> : The possessive case of a compound noun is formed by adding ‘S’ to the last word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Father-in-Law, Father-in-Law’s property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sister-in-Law, Sister-in-Law’s property.


    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shortcut Rule 7<\/strong> : After the phrases One of \/ Some of\/ Each of \/ Either of \/Neither of \/ Any of \/ None of, a plural form of a noun is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • One of my best friends (not One of my best friend) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • One of the biggest cities (not One of the biggest city) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Each of the boys is (not Each of the boys are) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Either of the teachers is (not Either of the teachers are) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Shortcut Rule 8 : <\/strong>Nouns indicating numerals should be used in singular form “A Dozen eggs \/ Two Dozen Oranges”.<\/strong> But say Hundreds of eggs \/ Houses \/ A hundred rupees \/ Two hundred rupees.

      <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Shortcut Rule 9 : <\/strong>After collective nouns either a singular or plural form of verb is used. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • The team is strong (here, we are treating the TEAM as an UNIT) \u2714<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • The team are fighting among themselves (Here, we are saying about the players of the team) \u2714<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Shortcut Rule 10 : <\/strong>An “Apostrophe” and ‘S’ should be used with living beings only to show <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        possesion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • The table’s legs were broken. \u2613<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          (This is wrong, because the table is a non living <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          thing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • We can say “The legs of the table were broken” \u2714<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Shortcut Rule 11 :<\/strong> Say, “A five rupee note”, ” A two mile walk”




            Shortcut Rule 12<\/strong> : Don’t say “family members \/ cousin brother or cousin sister” but say “The members of the family \/ he or she is my cousin”.

            <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Shortcut Rule 13<\/strong> : When two nouns are connected by “and”, and are closely related, add an apostrophe and S to the last noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              \n
            • Kareena’s and Saif’s house \u2613 (if you think they are wife and husband then this sentence is wrong)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                \n
              • Kareena and Saif’s house (as they live in a SINGLE house) \u2714<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                But you can say “India’s and Pakistan’s population” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
