Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences was set up on March 15, 2009 in Baroda with the generous support provided by Shri Balvant Parekh, who was then the Chairman of Pidilite Industries, Mumbai and his family. The Centre is registered as a charitable trust under the provisions of Bombay Public Trusts Act of 1950 and administered by a Board of Trust with members from diverse background and experience.<\/p>\n

Balvant Parekh Centre\u2019s aims and objectives are to promote the study of general semantics and other human sciences in India. The Centre houses a library and reading room, a conference hall, a seminar room, and an administrative office. It shares these facilities with the Centre for Contemporary Theory, which is also involved in academic activities of inter-disciplinary nature. Both Centres work together in close proximity and cooperation and complement each other through their programs.<\/p>\n

Balvant had provided support in starting an Arts and Science college in Mahua Gujarat India. He donated INR 20 million for Bhavnagar\u2019s Science city project and also donated to Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. The Centre caters to not only academicians, but people from diverse fields of life. Instead of promoting ivory tower intellectualism, the Centre has the potential through its plan of action to go to the midst of people and let ideas seep into their minds. This Centre is not established for converting people to general semantics. Ideas can be disseminated, people can meet, interact and exchange views, new possibilities and visions of life can be introduced to people who live cloistered lives.     Why General Semantics?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    An avid reader of works pertaining to general semantics and other related areas, Shri Balvant K. Parekh<\/strong> believed that by establishing a Centre dedicated to the study of the subject, he will be able to facilitate a process for spreading the awareness of the benefits of general semantics among the people in India. Mr. Parekh believed that the methods of General Semantics have the potential to lessen their social and personal anxieties (\u091a\u093f\u0902\u0924\u093e) and enable them to minimize conflicts and misevaluations. He himself had profited a lot from the insights drawn from his reading this subject, and therefore wanted to share such benefits among others.     Why Human Sciences?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    This optimistic note germane to the philosophy and method of general semantics serves as a pointer to its future development within the broad range of concerns of the discipline of the human sciences.     Fellowships and Potential Scholarly Affiliations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences has instituted research fellowships and grants for doing study and research in General Semantics and other allied areas. Those who are doing M. Phil. and doctoral research, or writing books, research papers, or monographs, books or preparing study material for courses are welcome to apply for the grant by sending detailed proposals any time during the year. The grant may include a fellowship at the Centre for a short-term duration of one month, or a long-term duration of three months; or visit to a resource centre in or outside\u00a0India\u00a0for collection of material for a research project. Those who are accepted for receiving the grant will be paid for their travel by train and a monthly allowance of Rs.25,000\/ (Twenty five thousand) for visiting the Centre in Baroda. In special cases, proposals to visit overseas archives for collecting material for book writing projects may be considered. We accept proposals throughout the year.<\/p>\n
