In November 2025, the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi renamed the Ministry of Shipping as the Ministry of Ports(\u092c\u0902\u0926\u0930\u0917\u093e\u0939\u094b\u0902), Shipping(\u091c\u0932\u092f\u093e\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093e) and Waterways(\u091c\u0932\u092e\u093e\u0930\u094d\u0917).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India has <strong>12 major<\/strong> and <strong>205 notified minor and intermediate ports<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Under the National Perspective Plan for <strong>Sagarmala<\/strong>, six new mega ports will be developed in the country.<\/li>\n<li>The Indian ports and shipping industry play a vital role in sustaining growth in the country\u2019s trade and commerce.<\/li>\n<li>India is the <strong>sixteenth-largest maritime<\/strong> country in the world with a coastline of about 7,517 kms.<\/li>\n<li>The Indian Government plays an important role in supporting the ports sector.<\/li>\n<li>It has allowed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of up to 100% under the automatic route for port and harbour construction and maintenance projects.<\/li>\n<li>It has also facilitated a 10-year tax holiday to enterprises that develop, maintain and operate ports, inland waterways and inland ports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reilsolar.com\/freepdf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/Ports-Infographic-August-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Image Taken From Source: India brand Equity Foundation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>What is the shipping industry?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The shipping industry facilitates\u00a0<strong>domestic and global manufacturing and trade via transportation of commodities and finished products<\/strong>, while also providing for the delivery of goods directly to consumers.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Shipping &amp; Maritime<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote><p>Maritime(\u0938\u092e\u0941\u0926\u094d\u0930\u0940) is connected with the sea in relation to navigation, shipping or trading activities done by the sea(\u0938\u092e\u0941\u0926\u094d\u0930).<\/p>\n<p>Generally, Shipping(\u091c\u0932\u092f\u093e\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093e) is the transport of goods by sea or some other means. Major ports fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, while non-major ports are managed by respective state governments and State Maritime Boards. In the fiscal year 2025-2026, these major ports collectively handled a record cargo throughput of 795 million tonnes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"874\"><strong data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"874\">Vizhinjam International Seaport:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"876\" data-end=\"1332\">A notable development in India&#8217;s port infrastructure is the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala. Strategically located near key international shipping routes, this deep-water, all-weather port is designed to accommodate some of the world&#8217;s largest container ships. The port&#8217;s first phase commenced trial operations in July 2025, with full operations expected to bolster India&#8217;s position in global maritime trade.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1334\" data-end=\"1358\"><strong data-start=\"1334\" data-end=\"1358\">Sagarmala Programme:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1890\">Launched in 2025, the Sagarmala Programme aims to harness India&#8217;s coastline and waterways to drive port-led development. The initiative focuses on modernizing port infrastructure, enhancing connectivity, and promoting industrialization to reduce logistics costs and boost trade efficiency. As part of this programme, numerous projects have been identified to improve port connectivity through rail and road networks, thereby integrating ports with domestic production and consumption centers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1892\" data-end=\"1922\"><strong data-start=\"1892\" data-end=\"1922\">Maritime Development Fund:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1924\" data-end=\"2442\">In a significant move to support the shipbuilding and repair industry, India announced the establishment of a 250-billion-rupee ($3 billion) maritime development fund. The government will contribute 49% of the fund, with the remainder sourced from ports and the private sector. This initiative aims to provide long-term financing, promote shipbuilding clusters, and extend tax exemptions on materials used for building and breaking ships, aligning with the &#8220;Make in India&#8221; vision.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2444\" data-end=\"2477\"><strong data-start=\"2444\" data-end=\"2477\">International Collaborations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2479\" data-end=\"2838\">India is actively seeking international partnerships to enhance its maritime capabilities. Discussions with Italy have been initiated to collaborate on port infrastructure, shipbuilding, and yacht manufacturing, reflecting India&#8217;s commitment to integrating global best practices and technologies into its maritime sector.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2840\" data-end=\"2874\"><strong data-start=\"2840\" data-end=\"2874\">Challenges and Future Outlook:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2876\" data-end=\"3285\">Despite these advancements, the industry faces challenges, including seafarer welfare and environmental concerns. Addressing these issues is crucial for sustainable growth.
